Benefits of Wine

Red or white?  Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, or Pinot Grigio is just a few of the wines out there for people to enjoy.  You can drink them or cook with them…but are there any health benefits to wines?

Every year, there are random articles that pop up covering health benefits of wines, coffees, etc.  What are facts and what are fictions.

Food and Wine (http://www.foodandwine.com/articles/8-health-benefits-of-drinking-wine) say that wine drinkers have lower mortality rates than beer and hard liquor drinkers.  WebMD (http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/health-benefits-wine#1) say that wine drinking can lower mortality from cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Why is that?  Wine dilates the arteries and increases the blow flow.  This helps lower the risk of clots that cut off blood supply and the clots that damage your heart!  Drinking wine can also help boost levels of HDL (aka the good cholesterol) and help prevent LDL (aka the bad cholesterol) from causing damage to the lining of your arteries.

Where’s the catch?  Red wine is better for you than white wine.  Why is red better?  It’s because it’s made by fermenting dark colored whole grapes.  Dark colored whole grapes tend to be high in antioxidants.

But food for thought is that wine tends to have higher calories than beers so everything in moderation is a good rule of thumb.  All in all, bottoms up and enjoy that glass with dinner!

  1. That’s cool that wine increases blood flow. Like you said, that will lower the risk of clots. Maybe I should get into wine; I’ll have to find some wine tastings to go to.
