Is Organic and Non-GMO Foods Better for You?

Once upon a time, strawberries and bananas were my favorite fruits.  As I got older, I had to stop eating them because of an allergy I started developing for them.  I would get red little itchy bumps that would stick around for three to four weeks.  Not fun!  The question is, do you think it’s because of the pesticides farmers were spraying on the fruit that caused the issue?

Yes!  Pesticides sprayed on the fruits had something to do with my allergy.  How did I prove that without going to a doctor?  It’s because when I bought organic strawberries, I didn’t get any reactions…again and again and again tested and proven.  Did I go to a doctor about this issue?  Yes and the doctor’s suggestion were to take an allergy pill every day. FYI, not all doctors are like this but…that was very disappointing.

Fun fact, did you know fruits have natural toxins that help protect them and/or helps them resist themselves from diseases and certain types of insects?  Do you think altering these fruits DNA alters their natural defenses?  Yes, it sure does.  This is where Organic and Non-GMO comes into play.

What are GMOs?  They are genetically modified organisms.  Throughout history, we humans, have “genetically modified” animals and foods to our needs.  The dog is thought to be the first organism we artificially modified from a wolf.  As for foods, corn started out as a weed with a few cornels and bananas and apples have their own history too.  Now with that said, we humans didn’t alter these things under a microscope.  No labs were used to alter and multiply their DNAs.

Now the question is, do you think GMO’s now days will not harm me?  The jury is still out on that one.  That’s for you to decide.  I will be cautious and keep my family away from it.  Yes, I will spend the extra time and money on buying Non-GMO certified foods as much as I can.

Why?  Well, simple example is the allergy development that I personally experienced.  I don’t want my family to have issues like that.  I also have come to realize that non organic and/or gmo foods are high in high corn fracture syrups and ingredients that I cannot even pronounce! Did you know that Honey Nut Cheerios have Butylated Hydroxytoluene as an ingredient?  Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) has a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).  Sure doesn’t sound “natural” to me.  Just so you know, under the hazards section, it can cause skin irritation upon contact and also considered a carcinogenic for humans and animals. Are you at your pantry now checking to see if it’s listed as an ingredient and can’t find it, ….you sadly won’t.  BHT is used as a preservative.  Companies don’t list the exact ingredients used to preserve foods.  Another suspicious ingredient is tripotassium phosphate.  It’s basically a salt that helps with a quicker cooking process of foods like cereals.  Does it have a MSDS too?  It sure does, under the hazard section of its MSDS, it said avoid breathing dust and to obtain medical attention if you have difficulties with breathing.  Isn’t that scary?  I don’t need to wear a hazard mask when I’m cooking in my kitchen and food made for me shouldn’t be this dangerous!  With that said, I will continue to buy Nature’s Path Whole O’s that have 4 grams of sugar and ingredients like organic brown rice flour, organic corn flour, organic evaporated cane juice, organic pomegranate juice concentrate and sea salt.

I am off my soap box now and no I am not a food expert and I am not scientist.  I am just a mom that’s questioning the food that’s out there.
